{"id":3677,"date":"2012-08-08T12:48:24","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T16:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/?p=3677"},"modified":"2012-08-08T12:59:31","modified_gmt":"2012-08-08T16:59:31","slug":"oclc-supports-open-data-license","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/08\/oclc-supports-open-data-license.html","title":{"rendered":"OCLC supports Open Data license"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"OCLC press release\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oclc.org\/us\/en\/news\/releases\/2012\/201248.htm\"><strong>OCLC has endorsed<\/strong><\/a> the use of the <a title=\"Open Data Commons Attribution License\" href=\"http:\/\/opendatacommons.org\/licenses\/by\/\">Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-BY)<\/a> for library catalog records.<\/p>\n<p>This is a great step forward, as it allows a clear path for use and re-use of library records without fear of a lengthy and costly legal defense over ownership of records.<\/p>\n<p>This solution is a compromise, <a title=\"OCLC and Data Libology post\" href=\"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/07\/oclc-and-data.html\">in the opinion of this blogger<\/a>, in that the data itself cannot be owned or licensed, nor could OCLC be able to claim to be the original creator of <del>the data<\/del> a great majority of the records.\u00a0 It does, however, provides a path forward that allows everyone to benefit, and that should be why organizations such as OCLC exist in the first place.<\/p>\n<p><em>found via <a title=\"Becky Yoose on Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yo_bj\">Becky Yoose&#8217;s Twitter feed<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OCLC has endorsed the use of the Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-BY) for library catalog records.
