{"id":3658,"date":"2012-02-12T19:01:18","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T00:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/?p=3658"},"modified":"2012-02-12T19:02:24","modified_gmt":"2012-02-13T00:02:24","slug":"none-of-this-works-off-the-shelf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/12\/none-of-this-works-off-the-shelf.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;None of this works off-the-shelf&#8230;&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2007\/03\/12\/the-machine-is-using-us-final-version.html\">Michael Wesch<\/a>.\u00a0 He has done quite a bit of note since that project (<a href=\"http:\/\/ksuanth.weebly.com\/wesch.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mediatedcultures.net\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>He is, however, re-evaluating the role of technology in the classroom after receiving reliable reports that his methods don&#8217;t always work for other teachers:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/A-Tech-Happy-Professor-Reboots\/130741\/\"><strong>A Tech-Happy Professor Reboots After Hearing His Teaching Advice Isn&#8217;t Working<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;Then a frustrated colleague approached him after one of his talks: &#8220;I implemented your idea, and it just didn&#8217;t work,&#8221; Mr. Wesch was told. &#8220;The students thought it was chaos.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was not an isolated incident. As other professors he met described their plans to follow his example, he suspected their classes would also flop. &#8220;They would just be inspired to use blogs and Twitter and technology, but the No. 1 thing that was missing from it was a sense of purpose.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A constant theme for this blog, and my approach to technology, is to experiment (or better yet, play) with different ways of doing things.\u00a0 Some things will work, some things won&#8217;t, and it won&#8217;t always be the technology that works or doesn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Sometimes it is the people using or implementing the technology that don&#8217;t quite &#8220;fit&#8221; into the picture.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing wrong with this; the challenge is finding the best technological fit for the people and the situation.\u00a0 Rarely does a &#8220;perfect&#8221; solution come about, but experimentation can help to bring forth a &#8220;good&#8221; solution, and that is often the best result.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may remember Michael Wesch.\u00a0 He has done quite a bit of note since that project (here and here).
