{"id":3323,"date":"2010-03-24T13:06:54","date_gmt":"2010-03-24T17:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/?p=3323"},"modified":"2010-03-24T13:06:54","modified_gmt":"2010-03-24T17:06:54","slug":"opendns-hits-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/24\/opendns-hits-1.html","title":{"rendered":"OpenDNS Hits 1%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DNS, aka <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domain_Name_System\">Domain Name System<\/a>,\u00a0 is one of those things that is easily taken for granted.\u00a0 However, the DNS service we use can determine our overall internet experience.<\/p>\n<p>I first encountered <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opendns.com\/\">OpenDNS<\/a><\/strong> at a tech conference, and was intrigued enough to give it a try.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see myself changing back &#8211; the service provides increased connection speed and the ability to control many aspects of one&#8217;s connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opendns.com\/about\/announcements\/160\/\">released an announcement yesterday that more than 1% of all internet users are utilizing their service<\/a>.\u00a0 That may not seem like much, but <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2010\/03\/23\/opendns-one-percent\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Techcrunch+%28TechCrunch%29\">according to TechCrunch<\/a>, this translates to over 18 million users.\u00a0 Great numbers for a service that isn&#8217;t a household name.<\/p>\n<p>The one element provided by OpenDNS that should get the attention of libraries is the ability to filter web content.\u00a0\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t examined it closely, but it appears that it could do an excellent job in providing a public\/school library&#8217;s filtering needs.\u00a0 Libraries and individuals should definitely check them out&#8230; you might make your internet access faster, safer, and more under your control!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DNS, aka Domain Name System,\u00a0 is one of those things that is easily taken for granted.\u00a0 However, the DNS service we use can determine our overall internet experience.
