{"id":3097,"date":"2009-07-19T19:10:19","date_gmt":"2009-07-19T23:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/?p=3097"},"modified":"2009-08-09T23:17:50","modified_gmt":"2009-08-10T03:17:50","slug":"millennial-disc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/19\/millennial-disc.html","title":{"rendered":"Millennial Disc"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s called the <a href=\"http:\/\/heraldextra.com\/news\/local\/article_b25c9a30-7242-11de-9feb-001cc4c03286.html\">Millennial Disc<\/a>, and it is being marketed as a 1,000 year storage for digital information.<\/p>\n<p>Before we run out and buy a stack of these for our archives, I would simply ask:<\/p>\n<p>How many years before some aspect of this technology &#8211; the <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">5&#8243;<\/span> 12cm digital storage disc, the disc formatting, the communication channel between the drive and the computer &#8211; becomes obsolete?<\/p>\n<p>This is not meant to be a snarky or rhetorical question.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moonviews.com\/archives\/loirp\/\">Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project<\/a> has been dealing with those very issues:\u00a0 extracting an obsolete data format from an obsolete storage media using restored obsolete equipment.\u00a0 If the team didn&#8217;t have a couple of original machines, and a technician who understood how they worked, the images would be incredibly difficult (approaching impossible) to recover.\u00a0 And this is going back only 43 years.<\/p>\n<p>I used to use CD-ROM, CD-RW, and later the DVD variants, for most of my data exchange.\u00a0 Now it is cheaper, easier, and faster to simply use a USB flash drive.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t expect the <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">5&#8243;<\/span> 12cm disk to be around longer than 5 or 10 years.\u00a0 Neither should libraries.<\/p>\n<p>Any archival storage should utilize high-quality, durable storage material.\u00a0 There should be a regular, ongoing evaluation as to when the storage media should be replaced.\u00a0 Always keep some old equipment (with old software) around to ensure your ability to convert.<\/p>\n<p><em>found via <a href=\"http:\/\/lisnews.org\/company_introduces_new_dvd_protect_data_1_000_yrs\">LISNews<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s called the Millennial Disc, and it is being marketed as a 1,000 year storage for digital information.
