Semantic markup within web pages provides a way to target searches much more effectively.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2009\/05\/12\/google-takes-steps-towards-a-more-structured-web\/\">TechCrunch<\/a> provides an excellent example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If I was to write a post that mentioned \u201cThe President\u201d without naming him, Google probably wouldn\u2019t realize that I was talking about President Obama &#8211; it might think I was referring to another US president, or perhaps the leader of a company. But using RDFa I could tag the words \u201cThe President\u201d with \u201cBarack Obama\u201d. That tag would be visible to machines spidering the page for indexing (resulting in smarter search results), but wouldn\u2019t be shown to users reading the post. In effect, it\u2019s a way to tell search engines about your content without exposing your visitors to extraneous text.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition, sites that provide well-structured metadata have the potential to be much more usable (and useful).\u00a0 Library web sites, especially OPACs and Resource pages, should include structured information that details the context of the displayed content.\u00a0 Using microformats in our web sites will benefit everyone involved over time.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sitepoint.com\/blogs\/2009\/05\/13\/google-now-supports-rdfa\/\">As David Peterson notes on the SitePoint blog<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Now that Google is supporting structured data it is high time to learn how to use this stuff.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google has made the jump into supporting Microformats as well as RDFa, calling their implementation &#8220;Rich Snippets&#8221;!
