{"id":2858,"date":"2009-03-25T13:41:35","date_gmt":"2009-03-25T17:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/?p=2858"},"modified":"2009-03-25T13:41:35","modified_gmt":"2009-03-25T17:41:35","slug":"wake-up-and-bathe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/25\/wake-up-and-bathe.html","title":{"rendered":"Wake Up and Bathe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A library district in suburban Chicago (Schaumberg, Illinois) is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbbm780.com\/Suburban-Library--Hey--Wake-Up-And-Bathe-\/4048660\"><strong>implementing rules governing library user&#8217;s odor and library sleeping habits<\/strong><\/a>, but is stressing that the rules are not aimed at homeless users of the library.<\/p>\n<p>This is a little hard to believe, as they also stress that they aren&#8217;t planning to invoke the rule against patrons who fall asleep while reading, but those who go into the library with the intention of sleeping.<\/p>\n<p>A little background:\u00a0 I started my library career in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brookfieldpubliclibrary.info\/\">Brookfield (IL) Public Library<\/a>, and during the winter months, we had several homeless patrons who spent many hours each day in the library.\u00a0 Odors?\u00a0 Definitely.\u00a0 One person in particular was so strong that I had to hold my breath whenever I was within 5 feet of him.\u00a0 Just writing this is evoking the exact memory of the smell.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, I didn&#8217;t understand why they were allowed.\u00a0 I am sure that many of our patrons left the library sooner, and perhaps didn&#8217;t return as often during the winter months.\u00a0 We definitely received complaints.\u00a0 But the director, someone who I have grown to respect more and more over the years, insisted on allowing them a safe haven during the freezing temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>My suggested solution?\u00a0 Find a way to get people the services they need.\u00a0 Resources for the homeless have improved, and everyone in need should avail themselves of those resources.\u00a0 If those resources aren&#8217;t available, or even if the people who need them won&#8217;t use them, do not deny to them what may be their one safe shelter.\u00a0 I occasionally wonder about the people I encountered as a page, and hope that their lives improved; but even if they didn&#8217;t, I feel happy that the library I remember so fondly also served as a safe place for them.<\/p>\n<p><em>article found via <a href=\"http:\/\/lisnews.org\/suburban_library_hey_wake_and_bathe\">LISNews <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A library district in suburban Chicago (Schaumberg, Illinois) is implementing rules governing library user&#8217;s odor and library sleeping habits, but is stressing that the rules are not aimed at homeless users of the library.
