{"id":2463,"date":"2008-09-01T22:03:03","date_gmt":"2008-09-02T02:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/?p=2463"},"modified":"2008-09-02T14:55:51","modified_gmt":"2008-09-02T18:55:51","slug":"google-chrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/01\/google-chrome.html","title":{"rendered":"Google Chrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Exciting news in the browser wars:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/09\/fresh-take-on-browser.html\">Google <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">is releasing<\/span> has released<\/a> a beta version of a web browser that it is calling <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/chrome\">Chrome<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Why does this matter?\u00a0 The open-source browser will feature:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Every tab running in isolation from the other tabs &#8211; if something goes kablooey, you only lose that one particular tab.<\/li>\n<li>Streamlined code designed for efficient running of online software, which translates into faster speeds and greater stability.<\/li>\n<li>A new Javascript engine designed with future web applications in mind (and optimized versions of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/apps\/\">Google Apps<\/a>, I bet).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even if Chrome doesn&#8217;t become a contender (and you won&#8217;t catch me making that bet) these and other features will certainly set the stage for advancements in other web browsers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Google has released a 40 page comic book (<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=8UsqHohwwVYC&amp;printsec=copyright&amp;source=gbs_summary_r&amp;cad=0#PPP1,M1\">web version<\/a>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/pdf\/Google_Chrome.pdf?id=8UsqHohwwVYC&amp;output=pdf&amp;sig=ACfU3U1nmiVEmBYhQVbdY-J6BRpSJO0EhA&amp;source=gbs_summary_r&amp;cad=0\">Pdf version<\/a>) detailing their reasons for creating Chrome and highlighting its features.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Why should this excite libraries?\u00a0 Just remember that the most exciting integrated library system out there, <a href=\"http:\/\/open-ils.org\/\">Evergreen<\/a>, uses the <a href=\"http:\/\/open-ils.org\/blog\/?p=15\">XPCOM framework<\/a> from the Mozilla project, and Chrome can likely be used in similar ways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here is a screen capture of Chrome&#8217;s logo (which reminds me a bit of the alien camera thingy in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0046534\/\">the 1953 version of War of the Worlds<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/googlechromelogo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2464 aligncenter\" title=\"googlechromelogo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/googlechromelogo-227x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/googlechromelogo-227x300.png 227w, https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/googlechromelogo.png 255w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-17939_109-10029914-2.html\">CNet News<\/a> for reporting the leak&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exciting news in the browser wars:\u00a0 Google is releasing has released a beta version of a web browser that it is calling Chrome.
