{"id":2347,"date":"2008-07-08T12:30:28","date_gmt":"2008-07-08T17:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.librarysupportstaff.org\/?p=579"},"modified":"2008-07-25T18:50:41","modified_gmt":"2008-07-25T22:50:41","slug":"open-shelves-classification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/08\/open-shelves-classification.html","title":{"rendered":"Open Shelves Classification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tim Spalding of LibraryThing has started a new ambitious project:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.librarything.com\/thingology\/2008\/07\/build-open-shelves-classification.php\"><strong>develop a new shelf classification system<\/strong><\/a> that would eliminate the baggage of the 100+ year-old systems many libraries have in place, as well as create a system free from the trademark, copyright, and license issues connected with Dewey.<\/p>\n<p>He is looking for a few librarians (one to five) to manage the project, and has started a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.librarything.com\/groups\/buildtheopenshelvesc#forums\">LibraryThing group<\/a> for everyone to join in the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>This just started up this morning, folks&#8230; they&#8217;re still talking letters vs. numbers and general classification philosophy.
