No final destination; no &#8220;library 2.0&#8221; finishing point:  it&#8217;s an evolving picture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sisyphus\">Sisyphus<\/a> analogy: it&#8217;s not what you do when rolling the rock up the hill, it&#8217;s what you do walking back down&#8230; &#8220;how do I do it differently this time?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Website:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/\">LiveJournal<\/a> &#8211; geared towards blogging to friends<\/p>\n<p>We use social networks as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\tassessment tools<\/li>\n<li>\t\topinions<\/li>\n<li>\t\tuse<\/li>\n<li>\t\tnon-use<\/li>\n<li>\t\tetc.<\/li>\n<li>\toutreach tools<\/li>\n<li>\t\treference<\/li>\n<li>\t\tinstitution<\/li>\n<li>\t\ttutorials??<\/li>\n<li>\t\tsearch<\/li>\n<li>\t\trelationship building \/ collaboration<\/li>\n<li>\t\tetc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He discussed library storefronts (comment:  makes me think of a  portal)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\tblogs<\/li>\n<li>\tphoto<\/li>\n<li>\tIM<\/li>\n<li>\tcalendars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\">Facebook<\/a> has lots of librarians, and for academic and school libraries, a lot of your patrons<\/p>\n<p>the key to using these tools \/ sites = social interaction&#8230; &#8220;not manipulating, but causing ripples&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are ready-made for groups<\/li>\n<li>how do people find out about ???<\/li>\n<li>can we use new tools to create new messages?  new images?  experiences?<\/li>\n<li>can we match our product offerings with their needs?<\/li>\n<li>the right message to the right person at the right time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Products\t\t\t\t\t\tNeeds<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\t\t\ttargeted message<\/li>\n<li>\t\t\t&#8220;marketing&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>blogs, facebook, myspace, posters, classroom sessions, etc.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Don&#8217;t just do it because everyone else is&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Don&#8217;t put all your eggs in one basket.  Experiment!  And be prepared to make a mess.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Don&#8217;t expect students to get excited.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Website:  <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/\">Google Groups<\/a><\/p>\n<p>q&amp;a question:<\/p>\n<p>Tools for self forming groups (his campus system implemented one; he has generated groups relating to library, i.e. distance learning library resources)<\/p>\n<p>Notes:  Social networking is the area I am least familiar with, so this was a great learning experience.  I like his emphasis on these services being the means to communicate with our patrons, not the end in and of themselves.<\/p>\n<p>I especially think his approach towards finding campus social computing groups that the library would be a natural part of (study groups, class projects, etc.) and introducing his services into the equation.
