{"id":1917,"date":"2006-11-24T19:04:03","date_gmt":"2006-11-25T00:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.librarysupportstaff.org\/?p=162"},"modified":"2006-11-24T19:04:03","modified_gmt":"2006-11-25T00:04:03","slug":"crime-in-libraries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2006\/11\/24\/crime-in-libraries.html","title":{"rendered":"Crime in Libraries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbbm780.com\/pages\/119852.php?contentType=4&#038;contentId=235184\">This article<\/a>, dated a few weeks ago, on a Chicago news radio station&#8217;s website makes it sound as though libraries are more dangerous than they are.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect that many of the &#8220;thousands of files&#8221; depicting the crimes were either a question of interpretation (&#8220;I know pornography when I see it&#8221;) or relatively minor issues that, perhaps like my former place of employment, the staff wouldn&#8217;t initiate calling police unless we actually witnessed it ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not familiar with it, though, check out Illinois&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/ilcs\/ilcs3.asp?ActID=1004&#038;ChapAct=75%26nbsp%3BILCS%26nbsp%3B70%2F&#038;ChapterID=16&#038;ChapterName=LIBRARIES&#038;ActName=Library+Records+Confidentiality+Act%2E\">Library Records Confidentiality Act<\/a> for yourself.  I think it benefits more than harms, and that in a criminal investigation, obtaining a subpoena for things such as telephone and library records would be part of an established process.
