{"id":1834,"date":"2006-09-12T18:26:57","date_gmt":"2006-09-12T23:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.librarysupportstaff.org\/?p=79"},"modified":"2006-09-12T18:26:57","modified_gmt":"2006-09-12T23:26:57","slug":"wikipedia-vs-britannica-the-e-mail-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libology.com\/blog\/2006\/09\/12\/wikipedia-vs-britannica-the-e-mail-debate.html","title":{"rendered":"Wikipedia vs. Britannica &#8211; the e-mail debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> set up an interesting and extremely enlightening <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/article\/SB115756239753455284-A4hdSU1xZOC9Y9PFhJZV16jFlLM_20070911.html\">e-mail debate<\/a> between Jimmy Wales, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/\">Wikipedia<\/a>, and Dale Hoiberg, editor-in-chief of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/\">Britannica<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I expected a polite statement of principles and strengths, and an establishment of the differences between the two encyclopedias, but a semi-playful banter develops, suggesting more tension than one might expect.\u00a0 Or perhaps not, as people seem to choose a side in this debate and defend it strongly.<\/p>\n<p>I use the Wikipedia a lot more than Britannica, mainly because I don&#8217;t own a set of the latter, and a high speed internet connection makes use of the former quite easy.\u00a0 I consider the Wikipedia to be a research definer:\u00a0 a tool to help one establish exactly what information one needs to search for.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t know what you need to find, it becomes harder to know where to find it.<\/p>\n<p>I think this is an Apples and Oranges thing:\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t recommend making an apple pie using oranges, nor using apple juice in a Screwdriver.<\/p>\n<p>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.resourceshelf.com\/2006\/09\/12\/experts-debate-will-wikipedia-mean-the-end-of-traditional-encyclopedias\/\">ResourceShelf<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Wall Street Journal set up an interesting and extremely enlightening e-mail debate between Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, and Dale Hoiberg, editor-in-chief of Britannica.
